18U Head Coach/ Director of Hockey Operations and Player Development
Bret has served as the head coach of the Bruins 18-and-under team upon the conclusion of his playing career in 2013. As a player, Bret played for the Junior Bruins in the now-defunct Eastern Junior Hockey League before matriculating at the University of Maine in 2004. While with the Junior Bruins, he earned first-team All-EJHL honors each of his four years and served as the team captain. He also played for the USA Select Under-17 team in the 2001 Four Nations Festival in Prievidza, Slovakia.
During Bret’s time with the Black Bears, Bret led Hockey East in scoring by defensemen all four years. He was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team and won the Maine Rookie of the Year award as a freshman. He was a semi-finalist for the Walter Brown Award as a senior.
Brendan Collier
16U Head Coach
Brendan returns to the GBL Boston Junior Bruins as a coach after having played for the team while starring at Malden Catholic High School. At the conclusion of his prep career, which included MIAA Super Eight titles in 2011 and 2012, Brendan was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the seventh round (189th overall) and played a post-grad year with the Valley Jr. Warriors of the now-defunct Eastern Junior Hockey League.
The Charlestown native played for the Boston University Terriers during the 2013-14 season and then transferred to Northeastern University. As a Husky, he was part of the team that went on a 20-2-1 run in the second half of the 2015-16 season and included the team’s first Hockey East Championship since 1988 and served as the team’s assistant captain as a senior in the 2016-17 season.
Billy Ryan
Hockey Operations Advisor
Billy currently serves as a Hockey Operations Advisor for the Boston Jr. Bruins in addition to his duties as an amateur scout for the Florida Panthers. His first experience with the Bruins was as a player while also suiting up for the powerhouse Catholic Memorial and Cushing Academy teams and was a member of the team that won the 2004 USA Hockey 18-and-under National Championship. He later played four years at University of Maine, graduating in 2008, having played in the 2006 and 2007 Frozen Fours.
After earning his degree, Billy played four years of professional hockey in the AHL, ECHL, and EIHL (United Kingdom). He retired as a player in 2012 and was a coach for Cushing Academy and the Boston Jr. Bruins. He has been a member of the scouting staff for the Florida Panthers since 2015.
Mike Klein
Website Administrator
Mike joins the Boston Jr. Bruins as the website administrator and staff writer after serving in the same role for the Eastern Junior Hockey League, US Premier Hockey League, and Massachusetts Selects Hockey League. He has been a fixture in New England amateur hockey circles since 2004, having contributed to USA Junior Hockey Magazine and the Sirius/ XM show Hockey on Campus.
Klein’s experience in hockey extends beyond amateur hockey in New England, as he has covered six IIHF World Championships on location.
Originally from Racine, WI, Klein attended Boston University and graduated with a degree in political science and earned a Master of Business Administration in sports management from Southern New Hampshire University.
