Marlborough, MA- Led by three-point performances by Liam McCarthy and Will Doherty and a 23-save outing by Owen Byers, the GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 18-and-under team toppled the Northern Cyclones 19U Prep team 5-1 on Saturday night.
The Cyclones took the early lead when they found a crack in Byers with 19:43 remaining in the first half.
"We were able to keep the spirits high on the bench when they got the first goal," said McCarthy. "We shook it off and moved on and just focused on tying the game and getting rolling from there."
The 18U's tied the game when Doherty hit McCarthy with a pass just as the latter was leaving the penalty box and the 18U's stormed into the zone on a three-on-one. McCarthy sent the puck to Adam Quinn, who buried it with 8:23 to go in the half.
McCarthy gave the 18U’s the lead with 18:40 to go when he took a pass from Eli Pendergrass and fired it home.
Josh Guden's shorthanded goal from Quinn and Doherty put the 18U's up by two with 14:03 remaining.
Doherty netted an unassisted goal with 10:32 left to make it 4-1.
The 18U's stretched the lead to 5-1 when McCarthy sent Pendergrass down the right wing. Pendergrass sent a centering pass to Simon Potoma, and Potoma knocked it in with 7:39 remaining.
"It feels great to get the win," noted McCarthy. "Everyone was motivated by last night's loss. Today, we just went out there and had fun and kept it loose and it showed on the scoreboard. The season is coming to an end, so we're just trying to make every game count."
The 18U's close out the Beantown Fall Classic at 10:40 AM when they face the NEFPHL Wildcats at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.
