Dorchester, MA- The GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 16-and-under team received goals from four different players and another outstanding effort by goaltender Kyle Rushton to knock off the Central Mass Penguins 4-2 on Friday night.
Max Ryan gave the 16U's the lead when he scored a power play goal with 13:49 left in the opening half.
"During the break, Coach [Brendan Collier] was telling us to keep up the pressure," recalled Ryan. "He told us that this is a 'must-win' game for us and to not let up in any of the zones. We played [the Penguins] twice before and both were close games, so we knew that we could win today, but we also knew it wouldn't be easy."
A power play goal by the Penguins 1:47 into the second half tied the game.
Brayden Robinson tallied a power play goal with 15:21 remaining restored the lead for the 16U's.
Once again, the Penguins tied the game with a power play goal with 6:36 on the clock.
Chris Alexander put the 16U's up for good with 3:52 to go when he scored from down low.
The Penguins pulled their goalie with 1:15 remaining, but Jack Kelleher picked up a loose puck, skated it into the zone, and sailed the puck in for an empty net goal five seconds before the final buzzer.
"Rushton was great," noted Ryan. "Both goalies [Rushton and Gabe Rudolph] have been great all season long. They definitely deserve a lot of credit. Both of them have made big saves when we needed them and they never get rattled."
The 16U's return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Foxboro for a tilt with the South Shore Kings. Game time is set for 3:40 PM.
