Walpole, MA- Goaltender Kyle Rushton made 29 saves to pace the GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 16-and-under team to a 2-1 win over the New England Bulldogs on Friday night.
The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead with a power play goal midway through the opening half.
"Even though [the Bulldogs] scored first, there was no sense of defeat," said Rushton. "The whole team was in 'bounce back mode' and it made us hungry.
The 16U's, however, tied the game with 9:19 on the clock when William TeDuits set up Brayden Robinson in the zone. Robinson ripped a shot that was saved by the Bulldogs goalie, but Anthony Madarese pounced on the rebound and shot it home.
Brendon Bail gave the 16U's the lead when he picked off a clearing attempt and blasted a shot from the point into the net with 6:16 to go in the half.
"Bail's goal was awesome," recalled Rushton. "We were really excited to get the lead and made sure that we wouldn't give it up."
Bail's goal proved to be the difference as neither team found the back of the net and a late penalty by the Chiefs prevented them from threatening in the closing minutes.
"The rest of the team did a great job of blocking shots and making it easy for me," noted Rushton. "Everybody's really coming to play right now and the mood in the locker room is a good one. We're excited for the rest of the weekend."
The 16U's hope to keep up the momentum on Saturday afternoon when they face the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack at Thayer Academy. Game time is set for 2:30 PM.
