Ashburnham, MA- The GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 16-and-under team rode multi-point performances by Nick Thornton (2 goals,) Michael Doe (1 goal and 1 assist,) and Brenan Bail (2 assists) to defeat the Central Mass Penguins 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Max Ryan gave the 16U's the lead when Doe sent a pass across the slot and Ryan shot the puck between the goalie's legs with 12:48 remaining in the opening frame. Max Sullivan also received an assist.

Thornton made it 2-0 thanks to a blast from the high slot with assists from Bail and Andrew Bohannon.

The Penguins cut the lead in half with a power play goal with 6:36 to go in the second period and tied it with 2:20 on the clock.

"After the second period, Coach [Brendan Collier] was telling us to not quit," said Doe. "We had a lead and let it slip away, but we had to keep taking shots and keeping pressure on the net."

A power play goal by Thornton from Bail and William TeDuits with 6:07 left in the game gave the 16U’s the lead.

The Penguins, however, got it back with 5:11 remaining.

The 16U's however, responded when Sullivan and Nolan O'Sullivan send Doe into the zone on a breakaway and Doe converted with 4:50 left.

"My entire line contributed to that goal. Sullivan gave me an unbelievable pass," noted Doe. "It was perfect and I saw an opening and went for it. I drew the goalie over and was able to backhand it in."

A late penalty prevented the Penguins from pulling their goalie for an extra attacker until the closing seconds and the 16U's were able to hang on for the win.

"It feels great to get the win today," Doe stated. "The last time we played [the Penguins,] we outshot them by a lot but didn't get the job done. This time, we outshot them [40-21] and things went our way. We know we're a lot better team than our record."

The 16U's rematch with the Penguins tomorrow at 3:30 PM a the Devine Memorial Rink in Dorchester.
