Marlborough, MA- The GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 18-and-under team picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks 3-1 on Saturday night.
The 18U’s peppered the Danbury goalie with nothing to show for their efforts until Joey Calder and Jack D’Alelio led a 3-on-1 into the zone. D’Alelio sent the puck across the slot to Ben Romer, who fired it home with 8:06 on the clock.
“Before the game, everyone was extremely energized,” stated Romer. “We played two very good games already, but we really wanted to get our first win this weekend.”
Danbury managed to tie the game with a power play goal with 7:54 remaining in the second.
D’Alelio answered back when he took a pass from Calder at the bottom of the left circle and knocked it in to regain the lead with 6:28 left.
“The goalies [A.J. Farese and James Potter] did a great job in all three of our games,” noted Romer. “They stood on their heads for us and got us out of some bad situations.”
The 18U’s threatened to widen the gap, but the Danbury goaltender withstood the assault.
Danbury opted for the extra attacker with 1:21 to go, but Calder sent the puck into the empty net to clinch the victory 25 seconds before the buzzer.
“It was great to get the first win,” said Romer. “The boys are really coming together and it showed, especially in the second half. The coaches stressed the importance of playing for each other and as a team and everyone has bought into it.
“We’re all very hyped up,” he continued, “and we can’t wait for tomorrow.
The 18U’s finish out the Eastern Alliance Kickoff when they face the Washington Little Caps at 11:50 AM at the NorthStar Youth Forum in Westborough.
