Dorchester, MA- Ben Romer tallied six points and James Potter turned away 31 shots to lead the GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 18-and-under team to a 7-2 victory over the Boston Jr. Terriers on Sunday afternoon.

The Terriers drew first blood as they scored two minutes into the opening frame.

Nick Thornton tied the game just under a minute and a half later when he jammed the puck over the goal line. Romer received an assist on the play.

“Coming off a late game yesterday, the boys were still in their ‘hockey mindset’ and everyone came out really hard,” noted captain Jack Kelleher. “It really set the tone for the game. It was surprising that [the Jr. Terriers] scored first, but we weren’t deterred at all.”

The 18U’s took the lead when Romer sent the puck behind the net to Michael Moschella, who hit Finn Racki with a pass in the high slot and Racki ripped it home with 8:15 to go in the period.

Romer stretched the lead to two with 13:57 left in the second period when he led a two-on-one into the slot and fed the puck to Thornton, who sent it back across the slot to Romer, who knocked it past the Terriers goalie.

A power play goal by Kelleher from Romer and Aviv Rosenbaum with 8:09 on the clock put the 18U’s up 4-1.

Twenty seconds later, Quinn Mathews put the 18U’s ahead 5-1 with an assist from Caleb Racki.

Kelleher bagged his second goal of the game with 4:34 left in the second period with help from Romer and Finn Racki.

“The coaches barely said anything [after the second period,] and they didn’t really need to,” recalled Kelleher. “They just told us to keep up the intensity and not take our foot off the gas.”

The 18U’s kept rolling in the third period when Thornton sent Romer on a breakaway, leading to Romer’s second goal of the game with 12:58 remaining.

The Terriers finished the scoring with 5:14 left to play.

“We were great at keeping the puck out of our zone today,” stated Kelleher. “The goalies [Potter and A.J. Farese] have kept us in so many games this season and to finally give them the support they deserve will only grow their confidence.

“Overall, it was a great weekend,” Kelleher continued. “We played two very good games and learned a lot of great lessons on what to do going forward. Spirits are really high in the locker room, and if we play every game like we did this weekend, we could play with any team out there.”

The 18U’s return to action on Saturday night when they face the Cape Cod Whalers at 6:00 PM at the Devine Memorial Rink in Dorchester.
