Ashburnham, MA- The GBL Boston Jr. Bruins bowed to the Central Mass Penguins 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
At the opening faceoff, the 18U’s looked poised to grab the lead with two great scoring chances in the opening minutes, but came away with nothing to show for their efforts. Rather, the Penguins drew first blood at the 2:37 mark and notched another goal 20 seconds later to take a 2-0 lead.
Another goal with 12:37 left in the opening frame put the 18U’s down by three.
Quinn Mathews put the 18U’s on the board when he stole the puck at the blue line and stormed into the zone on a breakaway before depositing the puck in the net with 9:18 on the clock.
The Penguins, however, got it back 50 seconds to go before the buzzer.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period.
The Penguins made it 5-1 at the 1:10 mark of the third and finished off the scoring with 11:31 remaining.
The 18U’s hope to get back on track when they clash with the Cape Cod Whalers 19-and-under team tomorrow at 3:30 PM at the Quincy Youth Arena.
