18U’S HOLD OFF WHALERS

Quincy, MA- Six players scored goals to lead he GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 18-and-under team to a 6-5 win over the Cape Cod Whalers 19U team on Sunday afternoon.
 
Michael Moschella kicked things off when he fired a shot from the right circle past the Whalers goaltender 1:08 into the game.
 
The Whalers tied the game with 11:03 to go in the opening period.
 
The 18U’s regained the lead with 3:44 on the clock when Michael Melvin sent Dominic Ferragamo into the zone. Ferragamo’s initial shot was saved by the goalie, but he picked up his on rebound and knocked it home.
 
Finn Racki made it 3-1 when he took a pass from Andrew MacAuley in the high slot and roofed it past the goaltender with 2:20 remaining in the period. Aviv Rosenbaum also assisted on the play.
 
The Whalers narrowed the gap to 3-2 51 seconds before the buzzer.
 
“The last game against these guys [a 4-3 loss on September 14] left a bad taste in our mouths,” said Finn Racki, “and it feels great to meet them again and get revenge.”
 
A Whalers goal 2:39 into the second period tied the game at three.
 
MacAuley put the 18U’s up again when he responded just after the halfway point, and a power-play goal by Kelleher with 3:01 remaining in the period extended the lead to two goals.
 
Nick Thornton bagged the eventual game winner when he beat the Whalers goalie back-door with 7:41 to go.
 
The Whalers cut the lead to 6-4 with 33 seconds left and bagged another goal with one second remaining, but the 18U’s were able to hold on for the win.
 
“It feels great. This game made everyone in the locker room a lot more confident,” noted Finn Racki. “We’ve finally started to come together as a team and we’re all looking forward to next week.”
 
The 18U’s return next Saturday when they go up against the North Suburban Wings at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.
