Marlborough, MA- The GBL Boston Jr. Bruins 18-and-under team dropped their tilt with the Springfield Jr. Thunderbirds 19U team by a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The game stayed scoreless until the Thunderbirds got on the board with 8:45 left in the opening half.
A power play goal with 24 seconds on the clock put the 18U’s down by two.
Quinn Mathews had an excellent chance to put the 18U’s on the board when he went flying into the zone on a breakaway, but his shot clanged off the crossbar with 12 seconds left.
Although the 18U’s held a distinct territorial advantage in the opening minutes of the second half, the Thunderbirds goalie kept the team at bay and the Thunderbirds were able to stretch the lead to three with 11:25 to go.
The 18U’s found themselves down by four with 7:12 left.
Ben Romer finally broke through with 4:27 remaining when he took a pass from Jack D’Alelio and tried to stab the puck into the net. The goalie made the save, but Romer was able to collect the rebound and knock it over the line.
The Thunderbirds got it back with 1:12 on the clock.
The 18U’s finish up the weekend tomorrow when they face the Connecticut Jr. Rangers at the New England Sports Center. Game time is set for 1:50 PM.
